Mexborough and Swinton Times October 4, 1929
Wombwell residents who were familiar with the life of the town twenty years ago will regret to hear of the death of a former townsman, Mr Thomas Collett, at one time stationmaster for the Midland Railway Company at Wombwell.
A friend of the family writes to inform me that Mr. Collett passed away at Morte Hoe, North Devon, on September 21st, having contracted pneumonia. Mr. Collett was the first stationmaster at Wombwell Main for he came to Wombwell on the opening of the Sheffield to Barnsley branch line in 1897.
He held the position for fifteen years .after which he retired to the West of England. The present stationmaster (Mr. Field) succeeded him. A well-disposed person, Mr. Collett was generally liked by Wombwell people and by the travelling public. He had a high sense of duty and in a manner peculiar to his generation had a way of upholding the dignity of his calling.
Many of us will recall the unfailing regularity with which he took his pew in the parish church on Sunday mornings. With his frock coat and topper he presented quite a notable little figure. For many Wombwell folk Mr. Collett will remain a pleasant memory.
He is survived by Mrs. Collett.
