Painful For Denaby

At the encounter between Wombwell Main and Denaby, on the Wombwell Main ground, it is as though the Wombwell players had said to themselves: “Ah, this is the team which thinks it is going to win the Whitworth Cup. Well, we will show them that we have not lost it yet.”

The cup-holders certainly did themselves proud. Batting first they knocked up 168, five of the side contributing double figure scores, L. Holmes, with 51, having the highest innings on his side. Then they skittled Denaby out for 30 runs, giving to each of them the satisfaction of scoring double figures. The first four batsmen made a “blob” apiece, and their example seems to have infected the rest of the team.

Without the last two men, who made six and eight respectively, the Denaby eleven would have been more “dreadful” than it was. I have not the bowling figures before me, but two gentlemen of the names of Hinchliffe and Thomas seemed to have behaved very unkindly to the Denaby bats.
