Wombwell Dentists Death
The death occurred on Wednesday of Mr Cyril Callaghan of Park Cottage, Park Street Wombwell, a well-known figure in the social life of the district. Mr Callaghan was born at Ossett of Irish extraction. He served apprenticeship with a dentist in that district and came to Wombwell fifteen years ago, first to work for Mr. W. Robson, a local chemist and dentist, and then to carry on the dental profession himself.
In the Great War, Mr. Callaghan served in the King’s Royal Rifles and in action in France received seven wounds. Being drafted to England, he served in a dental corps at Eastbourne. His chief interest was football and at one time he played for Wombwell Victoria F.C. He was very generous in his support of local clubs.
Mr. Callaghan was a member of the Wombwell branch of the British Legion, a “Buff.” and one-time president of St. Michael’s R.C. Club. Wombwell. He was also for a long period an official of Wombwell Conservative Club. On several occasions he made unsuccessful attempts to secure election to the Wombwell U.D.C.
He was leading member of Wombwell’s St. Michael’s R.C. Church. He leaves a widow and five children.
The interment will take place at Wombwell cemetery to-morrow (Saturday) when the service will be conducted by the parish priest, Father M. Goaley.
