Wombwell Colliery Director’s Death
A long association with Wombwell Main Colliery was severed on Saturday with the death of Mr George Snell (58) “Woodleigh.” Wombwell, director, agent and general manager of Wombwell Main Company Ltd and of Wombwell Main Coke and By-Product Company Ltd. He was a victim of pneumonia.
Mr. Snell joined the staff of the colliery 45 years ago, at time when his father, the late Mr. George Snell, was secretary, and later he himself held that position in conjunction with that surveyor.
For some time he held the position of general manager, and was appointed director and general manager in 1928.
Mr. Snell was associated with several industrial committees. He was member of the South Yorkshire Coal Trade Association, the Midland Amalgamated Coal Mines Committee, and the Midland Institute of Mining Engineers.
Former Councillor
He was trustee of Wombwell Miners’ Welfare Committee, secretary of Wombwell Mam Colliery Hospital Fund and member of Wombwell Town Land Trust. He played some part in the negotiations which led to the amalgamation the interests of three local collieries— Wombwell Main. Barnsley Main, and Barrow—in the development of a large new coking plant at Blacker.
His chief pastime was golf and tie was a member of both Rotherham and Tankersley Park club’s.
For nine years Mr. Snell sat as a member of the Wombwell U.D.C. without a contest, retiring about four years ago on account of pressure of other duties. He was closely associated with the work of Wombwell Parish Church and for many years was a sidesman and member of the Church Council.

At one time he was private secretary to the late Sir Samuel Boberts.
Flags were flown at half-mast at Wombwell Main Colliery and on public buildings in Wombwell as a tribute to his work, during the week end.
Mr. Snell leaves a widow, one son— Mr. John Snell, an automobile engineer in Barnsley—and daughter. Miss Marjorie Snell, a schoolteacher in London The funeral will be at Wombwell Cemetery to-morrow following a service in Wombwell Parish Church..
