Lance Corporal H. Hawcroft
(York & Lancs)

fell in action on Tuesday.

Intimation to this effect has been received by his mother, Mrs Hawcroft, 61 George Street.

During the fighting the platoon was sent from reserve to reuinforce the front line, and in passing through the badly smashed trenches, Private Hawcroft was struck in tehead by a sniper’s bullet, death being instantaneous.

His officer writes: “He did good work, and showed fine courage in leading his section across the open, under heavy shell, rifle and machine gun fire. I feel very much for the loss of such a valuable man.”
