Lonely Outpost

“Far from the madding crowd” in the military sense, is Pte. Samuel Dyson (26), a former Wombwell footballer, who for over a year has been stationed on the lonely Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. But happily he has other Wombwell lads to keep him company in his “Robinson Crusoe” existence.

Dyson attended Park Street and Modern Schools, Wombwell. Before the war he played football for Shipcroft United and later had experience with Rotherham, West Ham and Swansea. While with West Ham he toured Holland. Having moved to Harworth, where his wife and child lived, he joined up in August, 1940, and went abroad at Easter, 1942. He has won a cross-country championship while stationed in the Falkland Islands.

Pte. Dyson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Dyson, formerly of Wombwell, now live in Wrangbrook Road, Upton.
