Pit Tragedy

Samuel Evans, (59) miner, 11 Bond St, Wombwell, collapsed and died in the Billingley district of the Parkgate seam at Mitchell Main on Wednesday morning. He had been working on the night shift and was on his way to the pit bottom when he sat down to rest. He appeared to be in his usual health on going to work the previous night.

Mr. Evan resumed work as recently as last June after being off nearly twelve months through an accident.

Mr. Evans had worked at Mitchell Main for 33 years and was a well known figure in the Barnsley Road district of Wombwell. He was a member of the Wombwell branch of the British Legion on whose headquarters in High Street a flag was put out at half mast as a mark of respect and sympathy.

He leaves a widow and two sons and two daughters, all married. The body was taken from the colliery to Wombwell mortuary for a post mortem examination
