Impressive Funeral Scenes at Wombwell
Town’s Tribute
An Old Friend Sums Up
Impressive public and private manifestations of respect and sympathy marked the funeral at Wombwell on Friday of Mr Edward Tune, J. P., President of the Barnsley British co-operative Society, who died with tragic suddenness the previous Tuesday. All departments of the public life of the district were represented as well and as of the co-operative movement. Many of his colleagues in educational work were present. Together with a number of teachers. An impressive civic tribute was the attendance of practically the whole of the members of the Wombwell Urban District Council with the officials.
After leaving Branksome, Summer Lane, Wombwell, the cortage proceeded to the Methodist Church in Park Street where Mr Tune was a lifelong worshipper. The vehicles carried the 60 wreaths. The streets were lined with respectful crowds and the flag at the town hall was flown at half-mast.
The congregation fill the church floor and gallery. The coffin was played in the chancel while the mourners were assembling “all dressed in the Lord” (Mendelssohn) was played on the organ.
The Reverend F Balch (Rawmarsh) read the 23rd Psalm and the Reverend A.B. Brockway read passages from Saint Matthew’s gospel of Revelations. The Reverend H.W. Wade offered prayers.
