Obituary.

Owen Pascoe

Said to be the youngest Sergeant in the British Army in the early days of the war, Mr. Owen Pascoe (35), 39, Station Road, Wombwell, died on Sunday evening.

He enlisted with the 2/5 Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment on December 3rd,i 1914 and was wounded in 1917. For six days he lay helpless in “No man’s land,” his only companion being a badly injured comrade whom he assisted to safety. For this act of bravery he was “mentioned.”

Mr. Pascoe was a sergeant from 1915 till his demobilisation in 1918.

He was employed at Houghton Main Colliery. He was an enthusiastic sportsman and for many years a member of the Low Valley Methodist Athletic Club. He played football with Wombwell Reserves during 1922-23. He was quiet and modest in disposition and greatly esteemed in the district.

He was a brother of Councillor J. T. Pascoe, Vice-chairman of the Wombwell Urban Council. He leaves a widow (a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Jones), and two daughters. Mr. Pascoe patiently endured four to five months’ unavailing treatment in hospital.
