Mrs. A. Prendergast
Well Known Wath Teacher
The death occurred on Monday of Mrs. Annie Prendergast (59), of 4, Winfield Road, Wath, who was for 18 years teacher in charge of the Infants’ Department at Low Valley Roman Catholic School, and was well known in the Roman Catholic communities at Wombwell and Wath.
She had been a teacher in the West Riding for 27 years. On her marriage, Mrs. Prendergast gave up teaching, but joined the staff of Park Road School during the last war until married women teachers were released. She then worked as a supply teacher for a few years and was later appointed to the staff of Low Valley Catholic School, where she remained until she was taken ill the day after the school reassembled after the summer vacation this year.
Mrs. Prendergast was a member of Wath Roman Catholic Church and was outstanding for her work among the Roman Catholic community where she took a prominent part in the organisation of religious and social events. For a short time, a few years ago, she organised the Wath Royal National Lifeboat Institution collection along with Miss Payne of Newhill.
