Mr H. Shelton

A former member of the Wombwell Company of the Church Lad’s Brigade. Mr Henry Shelton (40) was given C.L.B. honours at his funeral at Wombwell on Saturday.

A service was conducted at the Parish Church by the Rector. Canon J. St. Leger Blakeney and Lieut. the Rev. C. G. Shipley and Lieut. L Knowles were present on behalf of the C.L.B. and formed a guard of honour at the church porch.

Mr. Shelton, who died last Wednesday, was born at Barnsley, and had lived in Wombwell about thirty years. He was a member of the Wombwell Company of the C.L.B. at the when Mr. W. Thorpe was Captain and Mr. J. W. Halmshaw was Lieutenant. He was a popular member of the Company in his day, particularly at the annual camps.

He had been a member of the “Old Comrades’ Association of the C.L.B. since its formation and both the “Old Comrades” and the C.L.B. sent wreaths.

He had been employed at Wombwell Colliery for 14 years. He was a member of the Wombwell Reform Club and had keen football interests.

He leaves a widow and two children. There was a large following of mourners at the funeral including a number of colleagues from Wombwell Main Colliery and representatives of the Reform Club. Workmates and officials of the colliery sent a wreath. Members of the Reform Club were bearers.

Messrs M. Charlesworth and Son. Undertakers, of York Street, Wombwell, had charge of the funeral arrangements.
