South Yorkshire Times, January 5th, 1934
Mr. Geo. William Hartley, an old Wombwell resident, died at 148 Houghton Lane, Wombwell on Monday, at the age of 74. He had been ill for some time.
Mr. Hartley was born at Barnsley but came to Wombwell at an early age. In his younger days he worked at Lundhill Colliery, but the greater part of his life as a miner had been spent at Wombwell Main. When he retired in 1928, he had been employed at that mine for 53 years, latterly on the surface .
Mr. Hartley was one of the oldest members of Yorkshire Miners’ Association, his membership extending from his boyhood to his death. Friendly Society work claimed his interest, and he was a member of the Oddfellows Society for nearly 50 years associated with the “Loyal Alma” Lodge.
For 27 years he filled the office of Sick Steward for the Juvenile Section, a duty he reluctantly dropped last year on account of his ill health.
He had been a member of the Wombwell Reform Club from the time when it was situated in Church Street.
His wife died 19 years ago and he leaves two sons and four daughters., one of whom he had lived with since his wife died.
