Kettlewell
The death occurred on Monday of Mr Richard Kettlewell (77) of 71 Summer Ln, Wombwell.
News was there to see that his sister is 81 lived at Halifax, and died the same day.
Mr Kettlewell was born at Kelfield, near York, but lived in this district more than half a century. Four months ago Mr and Mrs Kettlewell were appointed to one of the almshouses under the Wombwell Town Land Trust.
Mr Kettlewell moved to Wombwell as a groom to the late Mr Joseph Mitchell, father of Lieutenant Colonel T.W.R. and Mr J.T.Mitchell, and for 12 years has lived up Bolton Hall.
Later he was in similar service at Netherwood Hall, and for 31 years lived in Littlefield Lane. As a servant of the Mitchell family he was held in high esteem. When motorcar superseded horses he was found a job at Mitchell Main which he held until about four years ago. His death recalls a tragedy of 30 years ago. The couple have no children of their own, but adopted a boy at the age of six weeks and regarded him as their son. When he was 10 years of age by fell on the roller on the Mitchell Main cricket ground was killed in the eyes of his adoptive father. This caused great grief to the couple.
While the funeral took place at Wombwell on Thursday, the Reverend R.J. Jones officiated. Among the mourners were Mrs Kettlewell, Mrs Lockwood (Withernsea), and her sons Mr Robert and Roy Lockwood; Mr Walter Chapman.
There were present many fellow workmen from Mitchell Main, and the Old People’s treat committee were represented by Mr R Turnbull.
