Obituary – Isaac (“Ike”) Bedford

Mr. Isaac (“Ike”) Bedford (58). 9. Cemetery Road. Wombwell, trainer to the Wombwell Football Club, died on Saturday in the Beckett Hospital. He had been ill since Whitsuntide.

He was closely identified with sport all his life. As a youth he was one of the best runners in South Yorkshire, and among his most notable successes was a double win—the quarter mile and sprint—at Stainborough when athletics had a prominent part in the lives of South Yorkshire miners. That was in 1895, when he was twenty years of age.

In his career as an athlete, he won numerous prises and trophies. When his running days were over, he devoted himself to training younger men, among whom were many who made history on the tracks. He was trainer for the Wombwell Football Club since its formation, and did much to keep the game going locally. He leaves a widow and son.
