Obituary – George Peaker
The interment took place at Kilnhurst Churchyard on Saturday, following a service in Kilnhurst Parish Church of Mr. George Peaker, aged 50, of ’73, Glasshouse Road, Kilnhurst, who died in Mexborough Montagu Hospital on the previous Tuesday. He leaves a widow Mrs. Alice Peaker and three sons.
A native of Barnsley, Mr. Peaker lived in the Wombwell and Brampton district for many years before moving to Kilnhurst 11 years ago.
He was employed for 17 years as a chauffeur at Cortonwood Colliery, but on moving to Kilnhurst he was employed for about five years as ambulance driver at Kilnhurst Colliery. He was subsequently transferred to Manvers Main Colliery as a chauffeur and continued in this work until his death.
As ambulance driver at Kilnhurst, Mr. Peaker was a regular member of the Kilnhurst Colliery Ambulance Class. During the last war he served in Brampton A.R.P. demolition squad, and was a street warden on moving to Kilnhurst. Mr. Peaker was as to well known in the district as a drummer, and at different times formed a number of his own dance bands.
He also helped in several charitable causes in Kilnhurst. Mr. and Mrs. Peaker had been married 20 years.
The hymn “Abide with me” was played before interment.
