Mitchell’s Main Cricket Team

1950

Narrative is from Horace Jarvis with footnote from myself:

I attach the photo of the Mitchell’s Main team that we were talking about. If you would like a better reproduction I can probably produce another photo and hand it to you at a future match.

The team pictured is

Back Row – Jack Wood, Arthur Pape, Bill Lilley, Horace Jarvis, Doug Rodgers, Albert Allen,
Front Row- Bob Dent, Jack Harston,, Len Mattocks, Roy Cooling, Brian Sykes.

I could write a story behind most of the names. The best bowler that I had the privilege of playing with was at Mitchell’s, by the name of Jack Wroe , the uncle of Terry Wroe. He usually went home with “Talent Money” and a collection after a match. Jack later played as professional at Brighouse but found the travelling by public transport onerous. I believe his only child, Janet, died in Wakefield earlier this year.

You have stirred up happy memories. Every Monday night there would be about 20 smartly dressed committee men strolling down Bradberry Balk Lane to watch practice at the nets before the selection meeting over a free pint! Practise and active committees are a thing of the past I’m afraid.

Keep up the good work. Best wishes.
Horace.

Footnote:

This has brought up so many memories for me too as Mitchells were the team I watched as an infant:

Jack Wood
Bought my first house from him ! Was a butcher at the top of Hawson Street

Arthur Pape
Arthur used to play cricket with us in the field on the canal side

Bill Lilley
Was Mitchell’s stumper who just let the ball hit him and often came out full of bruises

Horace Jarvis
Also a teacher at Barnsley Grammar School – he was fearsome in class !

Doug Rodgers
Also knew him for many years on the committee at Elsecar

Albert Allen
I ‘went out’ with his sister – and wept when she dumped me!

Len Mattocks
The captain – who hit the hardest 4 I have seen

Roy Cooling
A local legend who also played at football for Barnsley F.C.
