Two 17-Year-Olds Were Mitchell Main’s Stars at Wombwell
Mitchell Main 63, Denaby 66 for 3
After a disastrous started in which four wickets fell for eight runs, Mitchell Main never fully recovered and were skittled out in the Yorkshire Council by Denaby and Cadeby in a little over an hour-and-a-half.
Mitchell’s 17-year-old stumper, Arthur Hall, showed what a keen eye could do in the crease and knocked up a top score of 16 for his side. Jim Lavery the only other Mitchell’s man to reach double figures, scored ten before he was bowled by Forrest. 17-year-old Jack Forrest was Mitchell Main’s bogey-man. In seven overs, three of which were maidens, he took four wickets and 13 runs. J. Richards accounted for three Mitchell’s wickets for nine runs. Denaby made a shaky start losing both opening batsmen. A. Ellis, run out none, and J. Munden bowled by Jack Wroe for three runs but the Wilks brothers saved the situation scoring 39 between them.
Outstanding feature of this combination was the complete understanding between the brothers when running between the wickets.
- Cory knocked up a useful 21 before being caught by Hall off Albert Moore, Denaby had all the time in the world, but managed to knock off Mitchell’s score in an hour. Only one thing would have stiffened Mitchell Main’s resistance – the presence of their star player, Roy Cooling, who is on holiday.
