Clayton, of Darfield House, Tickhill, general manager of Mitchell Main collieries Ltd, and a director of Shipley collieries Ltd, died on Wednesday at the age of 35.

He was taken ill while visiting his parents at Littleover near Derby. He appeared to be recovering from an operation for appendicitis which he underwent in a nursing home when he had a collapse. He leaves a widow but there are no children.

Mr Claytor was a son of Mr Robert Claytor of Littleover, Derby, chairman and managing director of Mitchell Main collieries. He was educated at Russell School and Birmingham University where he obtained a BSC degree. He was a member of the Institute of mining engineers.

Mr Claytor was appointed general manager at Mitchell Main about five years ago and he had many friends in the district. Among the officials at Mitchell Main he was a popular figure, all appreciated his optimism and bright spirits. When informed of his death an official at Mitchell Main said, “News of Mr Claytor’s untimely death will be a great shock to everybody here. Relationships with the staff have been very pleasant indeed and he will be greatly missed. We are all deeply sorry for his parents.”

Mr Clegg was also a director of the South Yorkshire Allied Collieries
