A happy Christmas to all our readers.
The year has been one of uninterrupted prosperity throughout the Don and Dearne Valley district, and it is evident that the residents are going to celebrate the Christmas festival generously and heartily.
It is reported from all local towns that the shopkeepers are having a busy time. Mexboro’ High Street was densely packed on Saturday night.
We have questioned many local tradesmen on the subject of the amount of trade doing, and the reply generally has been “nothing to grumble at.”
When a shopkeeper admits there is nothing to grumble at, it may virtually be taken for granted that he is doing very well indeed.
Mexboro’ Canal was cut in 1834.
In 1843 Mexboro’ and Denaby contained 1,300 inhabitants.
Motor cycles with a side-car must carry a red light at the rear.
The Midland Railway Co. pay salaries and wages yearly to the amount of £5,208,836.
Mexboro’ Rock Pottery was commenced by the owner, Mr. John Reed, who died in 1870.
Brodsworth miners’ checkweigh fund totals £335, sufficient to pay to 400 stallmen 25 per cent.
Mr. Robert Glassby, the famous sculptor, a native of Mexboro’, died in London, August 3, 1892.

Several local cases will be heard at the West Riding Sessions at Sheffield, on Friday, January 9th.
The Yorkshire Miners’ Demonstration will be held next year on June 20th, at some Yorkshire seaside resort.
The chief water supply of Mexboro’ in 1836 was a well in the centre of the Churchyard, which was filled up in 1860.
The Rev. W. Hutton has resigned the pastorate of the West Melton Congregational Church, and is going to Thorne.
The White Rose of York is the title of the bazaar to be held next week in aid of the Swinton Churchworkers’ dual scheme.
The “Times” Office will be closed for the Christmas holidays all day Christmas Day and Boxing Day, December 25th and 26th.
The Badsworth Hounds will meet at Hickleton Hall on Friday, December 26th. The Grove meet at Retford Market-place on this date.
Hooton Roberts Manor, which is a fine historical relic of the past, is now unoccupied, as also is Ravenfield Hall, the home of the Bosviles.
The workpeople of the district should have plenty of money on Christmas Day, as most of the collieries are paying the weekly wages on Wednesday.
The death took place at Wath on Saturday, of Mrs. Stanley, wife of the late Mr. C. J. Stanley, founder of the Wath Oil and Soap works, at the age of 67 years.
There are 121 licensed motor-cars in Rotherham, 632 motor cycles, and 20 heavy motor vehicles, an increase of 123 since last census. Sheffield has 1256 cars and 1881 motor cycles.
At the annual meeting of the Yorkshire Miners’ Association it was decided to appoint two officials to give evidence at the forthcoming inquiry in support of the Dearne Valley Light Railway scheme.
The death took place last Thursday at Oxton, Cheshire, of the Rev. Ernest Charles Thellusson, brother of the Hon. Mrs. Lindley Wood, of Melton Hall. Deceased for several years was Vicar of High Melton.
A conference of delegates of the Trades and Labour Council in the Doncaster Division on Saturday decided upon the advisability of running a Labour candidate at the next Parliamentary election.
A Canadian Government lecture on “Canada,” illustrated by lantern slides, will be given by Mr. J. H. Lough, Canadian Government representative, in the Public Hall, Mexboro’, on Monday, January 5th.
At the quarterly meeting of the Wath circuit of the Wesleyan Methodists’ Society, Mr. George Smith, of Swinton, was presented with a purse of gold in appreciation of his services as a local preacher for the past 50 years.
A gothic arch, facing the roadway and richly carved with grotesque figures and heads, can be seen in the grounds of Mr. Guest, Market Street, Mexboro’. The above was designed and carved by the late Robert Glassby, in 1839.
Mexboro’ Church, which was erected in the eleventh century, contains a beautiful specimen of the handiwork of the late Mr. Robert Glassby. The gothic figure is dedicated to the Patron Saint John the Baptist, and may be seen above the porch entrance.
