Wombwell Butchers are to present a cheque for £307 to the Red Cross at a dance they are holding at the Futurist Hall, Wombwell, next Monday night.

Under the auspices of the Home Guard an agricultural show and sports are to be held at Wombwell Main at Whitsuntide, the events covering two days.

Thurnscoe and District Fanciers’ Society, per Mr. L. Barlow, 51, Delphoney Street, Thurnscoe East, near Rotherham, sent £2 to “Mrs. Feather’s” Easter Egg Appeal for the Red Cross Agriculture Fund.

Lieut.-General Sir Thomas Eastwood, C.B., D.S.O., M.C., General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command, is to pay a visit to Wath Main Colliery on Sunday morning and will inspect the underground workings.

A branch of Wath British Restaurant, in a building opposite Edward Smith and Sons, High Street, West Melton, is to be opened on Monday by Mr. W. F. Paling, M.P. for the Wentworth Division and Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Pensions.

The Hon. Richard Wood, third son of Lord and Lady Halifax, of Hickleton Hall, who was so severely wounded in the Middle East this year that he lost a forearm amputated, has arrived in Washington. It is understood that Mr. Wood is in very good health. All three sons of Lord and Lady Halifax have seen foreign service with the Army. Pedrett, the Hon. Charles Wood, M.P., mentioned to this country a short time ago, and the second son, the Hon. Peter Wood, being killed in action last year.

Wath A.T.C. won the “Morris” Cup in an inter-squadron cross-country race over a course of five miles from Wombwell on Saturday.

Members of St. George’s Church, Mexborough, are trying to raise between £60 and £70 for essential improvements to the church after the war.

The semi-final of the Wood Shield Ambulance competition is to be held on Saturday, May 8th, at Wakefield and Rotherham, and the Wath Wombwell on May 9th.

Shortly after being awarded Military Medals, two Denaby soldiers with the Eighth Army, L./Bdr. W. Pass and Gnr. J. Wheeliker, have been awarded bars to the medals.

Gifts of rhubarb, which supports the Montagu Hospital many of the spare, would be most useful and very welcome. The Board of Management would be grateful to receive any such gift.
