Joiner’s Shop as Church – Memories at Bazaar Opening.

November 1928

Joiner’s Shop as Church.

Wombwell Memories at Bazaar Opening.

The days when Congregationalists used to meet in a joiner’s shop in the pat yard at Wombwell Main Colliery were recalled yesterday at the opening of the Wombwell Congregational Church bazaar.

George Snell, general manager at Wombwell Main, presiding at the opening, said the joiner’s shop was placed at the disposal of the Congregationalists by the proprietors of the colliery. They used it for ten years, until the church was opened in 1867.

The bazaar was held to raise money to wipe out a deficit on church work. The church, like many others in the Wombwell district, has felt acutely the effect of trade depression.

The opener of the bazaar was Mr. Henry Dixon, of Sheffield.
