Mrs Lucy H. Tate, of Wombwell.
Wombwell lost one of its oldest resident by the death on Monday of Mrs Lucy Hannah Tate (90), of 63, Myers Street, Mitchell Main. Mrs Tate was born at , Near Wakefield, and for 54 years had lived at 63, Myer Street. At an early age he began work in a glass manufacturer at Castleford, where she lived for some years. She came to Wombwell in 1885 when her husband, the late Mr George Tate, obtained work at Mitchell Main colliery. At one time Mrs Kate was associated with the Mount Tabor Wesleyan reform Church, Mitchell Main, where several members of her family have attended. Up to a short time ago she was remarkably active and helped in the house work. Her needlework in knitting were the admiration of neighbours.
She was fond of reading and never had to wear glasses. Mrs Tate had a warm affection for Wombwell, and never left the town even for a holiday. She also had a strong affection for the cottage In Myers Street, and the only occasion when she could be induced to leave it was when she visited one of her sons at Norton, Sheffield. Mrs Tate leaves three daughters, two sons (one of whom is in America), 19 Grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1921.
Up to the last, Mrs Tate was under the impression that she had a sister, aged 80, living at Fryston, near Wakefield. The sister died a week or two ago, and because of the delicate state of her health she was not told. Mrs Tate’s mother lived to be 83, and she was the last survivor of 13 children.
The interment was at Wombwell cemetery yesterday (Thursday), following a service conducted at Mount Tabor Wesleyan reform Church by Mr J W Fairhurst.
