With military honours the funeral took place at Wombwell on Saturday of ex-Sergeant Lewis Rowe (47), of Rimington Road, Wombwell.

He had met with an accident at Barnburgh Main colliery and his death followed an operation which he had his leg amputated.

Sergeant Rowe had a long army career. He joined the Coldstream Guards when he was quite young and had also been in the R.F.A.. He enlisted during the Boer War and after serving for 4 ½ years was sent to Egypt.

During the great War he served in the York and Lancaster Regiment and the RFC.

Since the mobilisation he had taken a keen interest in the ex-serviceman movement was an active member of the committee on Wombwell branch of the British Legion.
