Flooding has seriously threatened production at a number of collieries in the Don – Dearne area.
At Darfield Main, Wombwell, efforts were being concentrated yesterday on preventing water from washing away the railway sidings.
Floodwater, rushing like a river through the pit yard, has swamped the wagon weigh at Darfield Main, and all the coal is having to be taken to the neighbouring Mitchell Main colliery to be weighed.
Pit ponies washed out of their stables have had to be accommodated in a disused brick kiln.
Road leading to Houghton Main and Mitchell Main collieries are cut off by floods.
