Mr A.H. Tabor

Fifty Years as Warden

Wombwell Church Work

Mr. Albert Tabor (90), 61, Littlefield Lane, Wombwell, for fifty years warden at Wombwell Parish Church, died on Wednesday at the home of his daughter.

His wife died 23 years ago, and he leaves four sons and four daughters, all married. He lost one son (John Thomas) in the Boer War, another  (George) in the Great War, and had a third son (Percy) died as a result of war service.

One of Mr. Tabor’s sons, the  the Rev. C.W. Tabor, is Vicar of Tinsley. Sheffield.

Mr. Tabor was born at Stourton, Wiltshire. He started work on the land, but afterwards went into private service as a groom-gardener first in Wiltshire, then at Stretford, Manchester. In that capacity he came to Wombwell as a young man to work for Mr. Edward Rycroft, of “The Sycamores,” Hemingfield, who was then “master” at Lundhill Colliery. After holding this position for fourteen years he went to Mitchell Main as a storekeeper, but shortly afterwards took up gardening in the service of Mrs. Garland, Netherwood Hall. In 1897 he returned to the pits to serve as timekeeper at Darfield Main Colliery until his retirement in 1928.

Public Work.

In his earlier days Mr. Tabor devoted a good deal of his time to public work, though he never succeeded in getting a seat on the local authority. For many years he was chairman of the Wombwell Education Subcommittee, and for a long time was in office in the Wombwell and District Property Owners’ Association.

Mr. Tabor never wavered in his loyalty to the Conservative Party and for many years was President of Wombwell Conservative Club.

Mr. Tabor was most consistent in his attachment to Wombwell Parish Church, attendance at which he never missed as long as his health permitted. He served as warden under five rectors, and was held in particularly high regard by the present incumbent. Canon J. St. Leger Blakeney and his predecessor, Canon S.T.G. Smith, now Vicar of Attercliffe.

When he attained his 90th birthday on May 28 this year the congregation presented him with a framed photograph of himself to be hung as a memorial in the church vestry.

Mr Tabor is to be interred at Wombwell Cemetery tomorrow (Saturday), following a service at Wombwell Parish Church at 11 a.m.

The funeral arrangements are in the hands of Mr A. Marrison, funeral director, 34 Barnsley Rd, Wombwell. (‘Phone 55)
