Denaby 119 for 9  Mitchell Main 126

An Exciting Finish at Denaby.

The most exciting match of the season at Denaby was that which took place in the Mexboro’ League competition on Saturday. Mitchell Main were the visiting opponents, and they had not a full team, for Albert Jagger and Job Needham remained at Wombwell for the friendly match with Hope Glass Works.

However, Mitchell’s had a strong eleven, and they had the good fortune to win the toss, knocking up 126 before they were disposed of. Senior made 47, and had hard lines in missing the half-century, while Kilner made 21, and Willis Robinson 20, a kind of proof in my theory that the old brigade of Mitchell Main is the better half of the team.

Denaby had barely time to get the runs, in addition to which the Denaby team is not one to adopt adventurous tactics. They played for a draw and they only just managed to get it.

When time was called they had nine wickets down for 119, and only the most stubborn defence of C. Bury and Barker averted defeat.

The home side, with a little more dash in their batting, might have won. On the other hand they might have thrown their wickets away, and I suppose that is what they thought of.

Scott headed the Denaby poll with 42, and Luther Robinson was the next highest scorer with 34.

For Denaby, “Jud” Hardy got five wickets for 36, and J. Brown, for Mitchell’s, had five wickets for 38.
