The Boy David
County Honours for Wombwell Schoolboy
Kings Road Player “Capped”
If it be true that “as the twig is bent so is the bough inclined” we should hear more eventually of a woman lad who play cricket for Yorkshire against Lancashire at Bowling Lane, Bradford, a week ago.
This was David Caunt, aged 13, son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Caunt, 62 Main Rd, a scholar at Kings Road Council School.
David has earned the notice of the county selected by virtue of his outstanding prowess as a left hand batsmen and in this match he made the third highest score for his County, having hit 14 when he was unlucky enough to be run out.
Incidentally Yorkshire lost a match, scoring 75 all out against Lancashire’s 124 for 2. “We” were unlucky was David’s comment on the match, using the pronoun in the cumulative “county” sense.
Throughout the season he has captained the Kings Road School team which has won the Dearne Valley Schools championship with seven wins and a draw out of eight competitive matches. Incidentally he is also captain of the school’s football team.
In addition to shining as a batsmen, David is also clever stumper, a duty which fell to him in the intercounty match. His ambition is to play for Yorkshire when he grows up, and there are many who feel confident that he will.
