Obituary  – Mr George Scargill

Honoured by the department in which he had worked for nearly fifty years, Mr. George Scargill Wombwell’s veteran postman, who died last Wednesday, at the age of 76, was laid to rest by the side of his daughter in Wombwell Cemetery on Saturday.

The interment was preceded by a service at Park Street Methodist Church, conducted by the resident minister, the Rev. G. Hodder, who paid high tribute to Mr. Scargill’s loyalty to his church and to the faith in which he lived and died. Mr. Scargill had had a lifelong association with non-conformity in Wombwell. In the early part of their 53 years of married life he and Mrs. Scargill were members of the Wesleyan Reform Church, Mr. Scargill being secretary and organist in the Sunday School at that place of worship, and first secretary of the Wombwell Whitsuntide gathering.

At the funeral the postal department was represented by Mr F. Tasker, acting postmaster, in the absence of Mr. C. Taylor, and postmen, Messrs. F. Denton, J. Trout, W. Scorah, and G. Crossley.
