The Poaching Affray near Rotherham
Henry Hague, collier, of Wombwell, appeared on charges of night poaching and assaulting James Heeson, gamekeeper to Earl Fitzwilliam.
About fourteen poachers were said to have assembled on the cover side at Rainboro’ Park, setting nets before confronting the keepers.
Stones and sticks were thrown, and the keepers were forced to retreat. Heeson struck back with a stone, wounding one attacker later identified as Hague, who was arrested in bed with a bandaged head.
Bail was refused.
