At the age of 94, Mr. Daniel Hammerton, (Picture) Darfield’s oldest resident, died at his home, “Cambridge House,” Snape Hill, Darfield, on Friday. Born at Worsboro’ Bridge in 1839, he left school at an early age and became apprenticed to the joinery trade. Mr. Hammerton went to the Darfield district just 70 years ago. He at first resided at Low Valley, where there was then just a cluster of villages, and later started a cabinet making business in Snape Hill. He was very successful and at one time had as many as 20 apprentices working under him. He was appointed assistant overseer for the township in 1880 and later was overseer for over thirty years.  He was also for many years surveyor to the Urban District Council, and on his retirement became a member of that authority. The present premises of the council were his home for many years and were acquired by the council from him. Snape Hill Methodists have reason to remember him with gratitude. It was largely due to his help that the present beautiful church was erected. He has for many years been a supporter and worshiper there. The Sunday School children were very fond of him, and missed him at their anniversary on Sunday.

Mr. Hammerton leaves three sons and three daughters.   Mr. Jonas Hammerton, the eldest, is a science master at Headingley Grammar School. Mr. Holin Hammerton has a joinery and undertaking business at Darfield. Mr. Ernest Hammerton is a registrar for the Wombwell district.  His eldest daughter, Mrs. Ada Walton, resides in Manchester. Mrs. M. Myers, the second daughter, lives at Cudworth and Miss Lucy Hammerton, the youngest, has resided with her father.

The funeral took place at Darfield Tuesday. A large number of people lined the streets and gathered at the churchyard in spite of heavy rain. Before the cortege left the residence of Mr. Hammerton, a service was conducted W. A. R. Collins (Barnsley), and the Rev. P. Tillotson (Staincross) in the garden. Members of Snape Hill Methodist Church were present. and joined the singing of “Rock of Ages.” Members of Snape Hill Methodist Church acted as bearers.

Headed by Councillors, T. W. Illsley. J. P. G. Dickinson, T. H. Foulstone, E. Taylor, R. Randerson, W. Camplejohn, M. Upperdine, F. Bly and S. Blackwell the cortege proceeded to the church. Sigel and prayers were offered by the Rev. W. A. R. Collins and the Rev. P. Tillotson. The mourners joined in with the singing of “Abide with Me.”
