Yorkshire Assizes
A Case For The ” Cat.”
Arthur Oldfield (31), collier, was indicted for assaulting Rebecca Fish, wife of a Broomhill collier, and stealing a satchel from her, on July 24th last.
Oldfield was charged with an assault in which he broke the woman’s jaw in two places, and also inflicted severe injuries on her breast, arms, and ribs.
The prisoner was found guilty.
His Lordship pointed out that Oldfield had previously been sentenced to five years’ penal servitude for assault and robbery. If ever there was a case in which flogging ought to be indicted this, added he, was it. He ordered the prisoner to receive 20 strokes with the “cat,” and to undergo three years’ penal servitude.
