Wombwell’s “Queen of Beauty” for the Coronation celebrations will be selected tonight (Friday)
10 candidates will parade before the judges as follows:
Miss Eva Webb, Miss Ruth Turnbull, Miss Lucy Senior, Miss Florida Penketh, Miss Clary Lee, Miss Edith Hunt, Miss Phyllis Gamwell, Miss Florence Clark, Miss Florence Bell And Miss Edith Bannister.
The beauty parade will take place about 11 pm. The final choice will be made by two-stage stars, Miss Leslie Stewart and Miss Eileen Wale, appearing at the Theatre Royal, Barnsley, this week.
Over a period of weeks 12 candidates for this honour were chosen but to have subsequently withdrawn, leaving 10 candidates whose photographs we reproduced here with.
It was agreed in the first place that only Wombwell girl should be eligible but otherwise charm, beauty and personality have been the only qualifications.
Two of the girls who will figure in this “march past of beauty,” were attendants for the Wombwell Hospital Queen last year, while the third was in the entourage of Wombwell’s Jubilee Queen (Miss P Hague).
From those who are not selected for the Premier honour, maids of honour will be chosen. For train bearers have already been chosen. They are:
Audrey Mattocks, Beryl Kenworthy, Glenys Wilson and Doreen Jackson.
Wombwell had its first day of coronation joy last night when a coronation Whist Drive was held at the Bath Hall, voucher prizes to the value of £7 10s being awarded.
Several stage celebrities from Sheffield, Barnsley, and other places, have promised to attend tonight’s dance.
