Wombwell’s Debt to Wilf Booth

Wombwell’s never-say-die tactics have given them four useful points out of the Wombwell Feast holiday matches, putting them next to the top of the Yorkshire League table under Scunthorpe, who only have a better goal average.

It was a spectacular recovery which enabled them to beat Rotherham United “A” at Wombwell on Monday night.

On their showing last Saturday Thorne have no business to be at the bottom of the table. That it the verdict of Wombwell Athletic who beat them 2—1 in a gruelling game.

Wombwell had to go the full 90 minutes for the verdict. Wills move netting their second goal of the spectators were looking at their watches.

This was a “compensation” effort for Wilf, because he had been something of a flop at centre forward.

This is no reflection on Booth, since he is halfback or nothing. Switchover had to be made because Doug Darby was missing.

Wilf  cheerfully accepts the role of utility man.
