Wombwell Wife Beater Sent To Gaol

Sam Broadbent, miner, Wombwell, was charged with having assaulted his wife, Jane Broadbent on Saturday last.

Complainant said that on Saturday last, between four and 5 o’clock, and her husband came home, and asked her to make a bed on the sofa.

She sent a little bio says for a pillow, and because he did not hurry he commenced kicking him.

Complainant remonstrated with him, and told him to kick her instead of the boy, and “he did not forget to keep me, either,” she added.

Defendant cut her head and punched her face.

Defendant did not deny the assault, but said he was greatly provoked.

The bench considered the assault a very serious one, and sent to prison for two months. Subsequently the bench granted a separation order, and ordered defendant to pay his wife 8s per week towards her maintenance.
