Mr Jabez Shillito, one of Wombwell’s busy workers, is the headmaster of Park Street schools, and is very well known as a keen organiser, his services been very much on request as secretary for various movements in the township.

Amongst the officers he holds are: Headmaster Kings Road evening schools, member of War Pensions Committee, Wall Savings Committee, Recruiting Committee, National Service Committee, and the Wombwell Floral and Horticultural Society.

He also acts as auditor for the Wombwell Reform Club, secretary for Park Street schools War Savings Association, and holds the rank of sergeant in “C” (Wombwell) first battalion W.R. Volunteers.

As an illustration of the work Mr Sillitoe has done as honorary secretary of the Wombwell War distress Fund, the following particulars are interesting:

During his term of office he has used and addressed 30,000 envelopes, written over 7000 letters, and paid to dependents over £21,000, using over 26,000 postal orders in varying amounts from 2s 5d to 19 shillings; these orders have also been sent to relatives of work men were employed at Wombwell Main, Mitchell Main, and Darfield Main, some of them going as far afield as Worsbrough Dale, Worsbrough Bridge, Barnsley and Stairfoot.

There are on the books of the fund 637 families or 1851 dependents.
