Boy Bitten
Wombwell Tale of Two Dogs
Violet Clerehugh, housewife, of 5, Frederick Street. and Jack Lockyer, miner, of 52, Main Street, Wombwell, were each summoned at Barnsley West Riding Police Court on Friday for failing to keep a dangerous dog under proper control.
P.c. Fountain said that following a complaint made to him he interviewed the two defendants regarding their respective dogs, which had bitten a boy named Speight. At the home of Clerehugh he saw a black Labrador dog, and when told of the complaint defendant said: “Yes, I knew my dog was in it. I hope it is not serious.”
Lockyer also said he knew his dog had bitten the boy. The constable added that there had been no previous complaints about the dogs.
Walter Speight (12), of 11a. Copeland Road, Wombwell. said he was on his way home when a black dog rushed out of a yard in Main Street and bit him. As he ran a second dog came and attacked him. In all he was bitten five times, and had to be attended by Dr. Maxwell. His trousers were town from top to bottom.
The Bench made an order for each defendant to keep his dog under proper control and to pay the costs.
