Wombwell Player Injured

Of the only four players signed by Wombwell for the coming season up to Wednesday of this week, one at least will not be available for the opening engagements. This is Fred Pearce, who was with the club last season. It transpires that Pearce is suffering from an injury to his groin, and his doctors advised him to go into hospital for treatment. An operation may be necessary, but Pearce himself does not anticipate that it will be a serious one. When spoken to on the subject, he said that providing he can get a bed he does not think it will be necessary to miss more than one or two matches.

Pearce’s incapacity will cause sore disappointment among the Wombwell supporters. Pearce did well for Wombwell last time, and great things are expected of him during the coming season. Though only 18 years of age, he has already appeared in more than a score of Midland league games. Last year it had the misfortune to get his jaw fractured in the match with Grantham at Brampton, but thanks his pluck and remarkable recuperative propensities, he missed only two matches on account of the injury.

Pearce began his football career with Park Street (Wombwell) schools and afterwards appeared with Dearne Valley boys. He got his schoolboys County Cap against Durham in 1922 – 23. Before going to Wombwell he played for Dearne Valley Old Boys and Wombwell Guide Post.

He stands 5 feet nine and weighs 10 ½ stones. His home is at New Wombwell.
