Wombwell Park Tennis Club
Good Season In Prospect
The Wombwell Park Tennis club opens its season Easter Saturday (April 16).
The club has already made a promising start in persuading Dr G.C. Pickup to assume the office of president. Dr Pickup is himself a keen and a capable player.
The Wombwell Park Tennis club was inaugurated three years ago. Each year an increase in membership has been reported and players of a good standard of merit been brought out.
When the “Welfare” courts were opened at Wombwell they were available to all comers on equal terms, so popular did the game become that it was found necessary to have some organisation. Hence the formation of the Wombwell Park Tennis Club. At first each member of the club paid for games as they were played, but it was evident that if the club spirit was to develop this arrangement would not serve.
Consequently the following season two courts were reserved for matchplay. This did much to popularise the courts, and both the club and the council benefited.
Last season the club played friendly matches, 12 of which were won, three drawn and the remainder lost.
In spite of the industrial dispute the club prospered.
This season the courts will be available every day at no cost to the members, other than the member’s fee. A big accession in membership is expected to follow. The courts are among the finest in the district, and under expert supervision should improve. Several of the courts have been used throughout the winter.
