Mr H.W. Thompson, B.A., son of Mr William Thompson, a member of the Wombwell Urban Council and general manager of Wombwell Main Colliery, was awarded a soccer blue Oxford immediately after the match between the Varsity and London Caledonians on Saturday, in which Mr Thompson showed wonderfully good form.
Mr Thompson went to Oxford and more or less accomplished back and he would probably have got his Blue last year but that a fortnight before the into Varsity match he had an accident on the field and suffered concussion.
In the last engagement before the match with Cambridge, Oxford met a Royal Air Force eleven at Wimbledon on Wednesday and were beaten 2-4, the halves came in for special praise.
A critic wrote: “Certainly the Oxford defence performed with credit, particularly the halves and Thompson as pivot did all his work thoroughly well.”
Mr Thompson spent little time at home during the last two years but he is well known and popular in Wombwell. He is 20 years old and a remarkably fine physique. He formed a tenet Kings Road School, Wombwell, and afterwards was King Edward School, Sheffield, from whence he went to Trinity College, Oxford Stop
