Wombwell Man to “Fight” on His Birthday

An interesting attempt, to restore something of the spirit of the days of the individual challenge is to be made at Wombwell to-morrow (Saturday) in the form of a billiards match at the Wombwell (Station Road) Working Men’s Club.

The contestants are Mr. Joseph Cooper, who is 71, and Mr. Walter Tingle, who is 63. Both are well known figures in Wombwell. The game will be played in honour of Mr. Cooper’s 71st birthday and, appropriately, the game will be one of 71 up. Because of the difference of eight years in age, Mr. Tingle is to give his opponent a start of eight.

Mr. Tom Oughton has been appointed referee and Mr. Shevill, President of the Club, will preside.

The contest has aroused considerable excitement in Wombwell, and keen rivalry prevails. Mr. Cooper is said to wield a “nifty cue” in spite of his age and at the moment is favourite.

The game will be followed by a supper.

In a billiards challenge match at Wombwell on Saturday, Mr. Joseph Cooper (71) right, lost to Mr. Walter Tingle (63) left.   The game was one of 71 up; and to balance the disparity in age, Mr. Tingle gave his opponent eight start.
