Wombwell Man Threatens Constable

When P.c. Dolby went to the house of Thomas Marshall (48), 55. George Street. Wombwell, to serve a summons on his son he got anything but a cordial greeting.

At Barnsley West Riding Court on Monday the constable related the manner of his reception to the magistrates. Marshall being summoned for using violent and abusive language.

Defendant did not appear.

Dolby said he knocked at the door and the son not being at home, Marshall invited him in.

After witness had read out the summons Marshall flew into a violent rage, dashed across the house to the fireplace, picked up the poker and threatened him with it.

Witness backed to the door and defendant followed him. shouting. “Get out of the —- house before I —- stiffen you with the poker.”

Marshall followed witness on to the pavement and again used violent and abusive language. The whole population, including women and children, came into the street and in their presence Marshall shouted. “The whole lot of you want burning”

Fining the defendant £.3 and intimating that he would have a month in which to pay, the Chairman (Mr. T. H Foulstone) said Marshall had threatened the constable.
