Lesson from Accident.

Wombwell Man Crushed by Half a Ton of Stone.

When a verdict of “Death from misadventure was returned at a Wombwell inquest yesterday, on Jim Bowen (29), trammer, of 64, Station Dane, Wombwell, it was stated that he was buried by half ton of stone at the Mitchell Main Colliery.

Deputy Harry Parker, of 15, Station Road, Wombwell, agreed that the question of timbering gate ends was important one. The accident could not have been foreseen.

Mr. G. W. Hall (Inspector of Mines) suggested that more attention might be given to the general principle of timbering the gate ends. “We can only take a lesson from this accident,” he said, “although we cannot say that the setting of another bar would have prevented it.”
