Wombwell Man Appointed Secretary

Mr. Joseph Winder, 133, Summer Lane, Wombwell, has been appointed general secretary of the Yorkshire Deputies’ Association in succession to Mr. J. Gilgannon, who died at Whitsuntide.
The appointment was made at Barnsley last Saturday. At the meeting every brunch was represented with the exception of Morley and Ryhill.
The candidates were Messrs. W. Cardwell (Frickley), R. N. Kaye (Darfield), S. Lindley (Chapeltown), P. Ruse (Dayton) and J. Winder (Wombwell).
The voting was: Mr. Winder 21, Messrs. Lindley and Russ 7 Mr. Kaye 3, and Mr. Cardwell 2.
Mr. Winder commenced his mining at Wombwell Main as a deputy in 1913 and has been employed at that colliery ever since. In the same year he was appointed delegate to the Wombwell branch of the Yorkshire Deputies’ Association and continued in that capacity until 1919. He was then elected a trustee and was re-elected every year up to 1930 when he was appointed president. Since the death of Mr. Gilgannon the secretarial duties have been fulfilled by Mr. Winder.
For many years Mr. Winder has been prominent in the social life of Wombwell. In 1922 he was elected a member of the Wombwell Urban District Council and resigned his seat two years ago. For eight years he was a member of the Wombwell Education Committee and for a time chairman of the Wombwell Library Committee.
He is well known in Wesleyan circles as a local preacher.
