This photograph will evoke happy memories amongst old cricket enthusiasts.

It was taken in September 1903, after a famous victory. The team is Wombwell Main and the trophy is the old Mexborough League Cup which they had just won by beating Mitchell Main in a test match.

The two teams had tied for the championship, Wombwell Main having played a draw of 31 runs each against White Lane, and a Test Match, therefore, necessary.

The game was played at Swinton on a “sticky” wicket. Wombwell Main opened the batting and, to a great whoop of cheering from Mitchell Main supporters, were dismissed for 57.

The tables were dramatically turned when Mitchell Main were rushed off the pitch for 40, Fred Turner taking seven wickets for 19 runs and Sam Thomas 3 for 6.

The photograph was taken after Wombwell Main reached home to celebrate. Their headquarters at the time were at the old Sir George’s arms, which had not then been rebuilt.

Gamekeeper Brown prophesied well when he remarked after Wombwell Means dismissal, “Given a good captain, Wombwell Main can still win.”

The trophy was given by Whitworths.
