Signs of Rejuvenation.

A Pack Out Last Saturday.

Sportsmen throughout the Dearne Valley will be pleased to hear that the Wombwell Harriers Club is showing signs of coming to life again, after several seasons of semi-hibernation. Like everything else in the sports line, the war took all the interest out of cross-country running, and though the Wombwell club was never really disbanded its activities were confined to the club room.

An attempt was made last season to put the club un its feet again, but although Mr W. Shaw, one of the most experienced athletes connected with it, put a good deal of time and energy into the effort, the right people were not interested.

Several individuals who for many years have been active in promoting the amateur cause in Wombwell and district, have now taken hold of the reins, and the club appears to have prospects of a successful future. Mr. Bert Latham, secretary, was for many years in the front rank among prize-winning pedestrian in Yorkshire, and Mr. Fred Dixon, who has held at different times the half mile and five-miles Yorkshire cycling championships, is also identified with the club as treasurer. They will be supported in their efforts by a hardworking committee.

A “pack” turned out under the new auspices from the club” the Ship Inn, Wombwell, on Saturday Seven runners took the route via Park street, Broomhill lane, Broomhill, Ings road ,Station lane, and back to headquarters. A moderately good pace was maintained throughout. H. Barlow took the lead of F. Beck, G. Hanson, and B. Latham, with H. Godfrey, J. Latham, T. Wood in close attendance.

The “pack” was in the same order at the town Hall, Wombwell, when she would made a great sprint can all hold back, but failed by 5 yards to reach Barlow.

The result was: 1.H Barlow, 2.G Wood, 3.F Beck, 4. H Godfrey, 5. G Hanson, 6. J Latham, 7. R. Latham.

Today (Saturday) the pack will start from the Ship Inn at 3-30 p.m., and a cordial invitation is extended to sportsmen of all ages, would like to turnout. Intending runners can be enrolled at 3 p.m.
