Big Crowd at First Trial.
A large crowd attended Wombwell’s first public practice match on the Hough Lane ground on Saturday. The heat was exceptionally trying for the players, but from the standpoint of the spectators the conditions were ideal. The teams consisted chiefly of young players who had applied for trials. Among them, however, were a fair sprinkling of signed players, including Clarke (full back), who assisted Wombwell against Bradford at the end of last season; Bradshaw (half-back), who joined Wombwell from Elsecar B.C. at the beginning of last campaign; B. Foster and J. Foster (half-backs), the well-known Ardsley brothers; W, Jones (inside-right), a former Wombwell player; Holmes (centre forward), a clever young player from Wombwell St. Michael’s; and Ashmore (outside-left), who was one of the best players in the team at Hough Lane last reason.
The conditions were against good football but a brisk pace was maintained and some excellent movements were seen. The teams were well balanced and a ding-dong battle ensued. Among the players who showed early promise were Clarke (full back), Spooner (inside-right), from Grenoside, and Foster (centre-half). After an up and down tussle of 30 minutes the “Blues” took the lead through Sage, the outside-right from the Guide Post. The “Reds” equalised through W. Jones. Ashmore added a second for the “Blues.” In the second half a trial was given to Bond, a full b ac k from Worksop own. The remainder of the game was vigorously contested and eventually the “Reds’ Won 3 – 2, further goals being scored by Jones and Holmes.
A match will be held to-morrow at 3-30.
