Barnsley Independent – Saturday 21 June 1919

Wombwell Curate’s Gallant Rescue.

Returning home on Sunday, after the service at which he had been ordained curate of Wombwell Parish Church, the Rev. R. H. Goode, late lieutenant in the Army, saw a child struggling in the canal.

The reverend gentleman instantly jumped into the water in full clerical garb, and succeeded in effecting a rescue.

As a result of his immersion, Mr. Goode was taken ill and confined to bed.
