Wombwell Couple’s Golden Wedding

An old Wombwell couple, Mr. and Mrs. David Ibbotson, of 6, Copeland Road, celebrated their Golden Wedding on Wednesday. They were married at Barnsley on March 13th, 1890.

Mr. lbbotson was born at Kitroyd, Jump. Mrs. Ibbotson, whose maiden name was Sarah Ann Brough, was born at Lundhill.

Mr. Ibbotson started work at Lundhill Colliery when he was 12, and worked at Lundhill until the colliery was closed about 1895, and then went to Cortonwood, where he remained as a trammer for six years. At the end of that period he went to Wombwell Main Colliery where he remained until he met with an accident which terminated his working life ten years ago. He is now 69, and his wife 68. Mr. and Mrs. Ibbotson have often been told that it is unlucky to be married on the 13th, but they have had plenty of proof to the contrary.

Mr. Ibbotson has always had a fancy for horticulture and when he obtained one of the old people’s bungalows with a fairly large garden his ambition was realised. Even in its winter aspect his garden is a credit to him. Despite rather severe physical handicap he has won the first prize in a Wombwell U.D.C. garden competition two years in succession and is out for a “hat-trick.” Another of Mr. Ibbotson’s hobbies is fishing.

Mr. and Mrs. Ibbotson are to have Golden Wedding party on Sunday.
