Wombwell Club’s Record
The Wombwell club, Shipcroft United, have had another recordbreaking year with a prospect of more triumphs to come. Consecutively for the past three seasons they have won the Barnsley Minor League championship, and now they have reached the final for the fourth time, and meet Birdwell on Jump Home Guard ground this week-end. This season also, they are in the final of the Barnsley Challenge Cup and semi-final of Wombwell Walton Charity Cup.
This year they have created what they think is a record for Barnsley district football in scoring 150 goals against 30 in league matches. One player alone, Frank Horsfield, their centre-forward, has scored 85 goals, which also should be a record. Shipcroft is well known as a “nursery” club, and there are no better known scouts on northern rounds than their secretary, Fred Bonell, and his brother Harold.
In recent years the club have sent Colin Collindridge to Sheffield United, Cyril Grant to the Wolves, Sam Dyson to West Ham, and Stanley Askin to Port Vale.
