Wombwell Casualties

Private Ward, of the first K.O.S.B., As written home to his parents have Milton Street, Wombwell, stating that he is lying in a hospital, having been wounded in the arm in the Dardanelles. He is however recovering rapidly.

Private Ward also sends the sad information that his “pal,” Private Ernest Hyde Smith, of the same regiment, and whose home is in Gower St, Wombwell had been shot through the head and killed.

Before enlisting in January last Smith was employed as a trammer at the Mitchell Main colliery. Sunday, August 22 was his 19th birthday.
